The Truth About Daily Dose of Prep
Let's start 2019 off with some truth. My style has changed.
Over the past six months or so my style has expanded. I say expanded because although I still love my Lilly Pulitzer shift dresses I also love crop tops, year-round neutrals, and cheetah print. I wear hoop earrings just as often as I wear my pearl studs and I find myself shopping at Forever 21 just as much as I shop at J. Crew.
For me simpler, tailored style is more up my alley. I love pairing a simple turtleneck with a great pair of jeans and a loafer or a stylish sneaker. I still love pearls and a classic navy and white combination though. I won't ever leave monograms behind and I also love my Palm Beach Sandals. Now, I enjoy incorporating those into a simpler style.
Like I said, I haven't abandoned my preppy roots, but they've matured from bright colors and New England inspiration to muted colors and neutrals inspired by Parisian class. I still love a crisp button down and my cheetah loafers, but I also love raw hemmed jeans, white ankle boots and layered necklaces. I shared a little bit of my matured style on my Instagram story the other day featuring some of my fashion inspiration for 2019. Since sharing, I've had many readers reach out to me asking how they can shop these photos. Truth is, these photos are all from Pinterest but I shopped the photos and am sharing my 2019 fashion starter closet.

Turtlenecks - In the wintertime all I want to do is wear turtlenecks. They can be styled perfectly with any denim, fun skirts, and in the early fall you can style them with shorts. I have several tissue turtleneck bodysuits from BooHoo in my closet because they're inexpensive and extremely versatile. I love wearing mine with my favorite pair of high waisted jeans and a pair of ankle boots or sneakers. Dress turtlenecks up with layered necklaces, hair scarves and fun earrings.
Large Sweaters - On extremely cold days, I gravitate towards chunky sweaters instead of lighter bodysuits and blouses. I have a wide array of neutral colored sweaters for chilly days. I style them with a pair of raw hemmed denim jeans or black jeans and boots. I even wear these sweaters with Lululemon leggings and sneakers for a dressier casual outfit.
Blazer - I've started slowly adding blazers to my wardrobe this season. I love using a fun hounds tooth printed blazer to dress up any outfit. You can throw these over a thinner sweater or turtleneck for fancier occasions. Wearing blazers with jeans is an easy, effortless look. I style these outfits with boots or mules.
Cheetah Jacket - This is still on my shopping list but I need to add this jacket to my closet. This is a perfect jacket to add a element of uniqueness and fun to any look. You can style this with a black denim skirt and a turtleneck for a dressy evening look, or with leggings and a graphic tee for a casual comfy outfit.
Denim - I attended my freshman year of college with one pair of jeans in my suitcase. One pair. Now, I love investing in different shades of denim. I've found that high waisted jeans look better on my body than low rise, but nonetheless I love my white skinny jeans to my culottes, distressed black jeans and raw-hemmed medium wash jeans. Having an assortment of denim creates for a long-lasting and versatile wardrobe where you can recycle the same tops without having every outfit look the same.
Denim Skirts - A few denim skirts dress up any outfit you might wear with regular jeans. Style these skirts with casual sneakers or with fun over the knee boots for an edgier flair.
Leopard Skirt - This wrap leopard skirt is so unique and is deceptively versatile with neutral colors. You can style this with black and white bodysuits, a tissue turtleneck, a white top with a leather jacket, a black sweater, or a crisp white blouse. For a more casual, daytime look wear this outfit with sneakers and a graphic tee and for a nighttime look, wear this skirt with black booties.
Ankle Boots - I wear my ankle boots every single weekend. No matter if they have a heel or not, you can never go wrong in investing in a pair of black and white booties. You don't have to spend a lot on these shoes, but they can be styled with jeans, skirts, and leggings.
Chelsea Rain boots - I received these rain boots for Christmas and I love them. They're light on your legs and can be worn in various ways. For days running errands, style these with leggings and your favorite oversized sweatshirt. On winter days, wear them with a chunky sweater and your go-to pair of jeans. Even in the summertime, you can wear these with jean cutoffs and your favorite painter's tee from J. Crew.
Sneakers - Over the past year, I've started investing in stylish sneakers. Tretorns, Supergas and Old Skool Vans are great shoes to keep in your closet when you want to look put together but still be comfortable. I don't want to walk around in the cold all day in a pair of mules because they're uncomfortable to walk around campus in and in the winter, it's cold on my feet. Cute sneakers are a much more feasible option.
Hair Scarves - My favorite trend of 2018. They make literally any outfit look incredible no matter if you're in leggings and a sweatshirt or a ball gown. They're affordable, versatile and have been fabulous since the 50's.
Hoop Earrings - If you want to switch up your pearl earrings, try a hoop. I recently started wearing smaller gold hoops regularly and have loved how they dress up easy outfits. Even in a full face of makeup, a hair scarf and a sweatshirt gold hoops are effortlessly stylish.
Initial Necklace - I love a great monogram, but if you want to switch things up a little go with a single initial necklace. Anthropologie makes amazing initial necklaces of all sizes.
Chunky Scarf - In the wintertime, I wear a chunky scarf just about every single day. They're practical but trendy and stylish. I have the same H&M chunky scarf in three colors and wear them to not only stay warm, but to also add another element of style to my winter looks.
